Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region (Specification of borders) and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country covers both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. However, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% by 2050. In 1900, Europe's share of the world's population was 25%. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were largely focused upon Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in Western European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the west and the Warsaw Pact in the east. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Europe and Asia have been together for much longer than India and Asia and the boundary between Europe and Asia is less substantial than the boundary between India and Asia. The accepted boundaries of Europe and Asia came about for cultural reasons, not essentially geographic. It began with the ancient Greeks who recognised a boundary between their cultures and others in Asia Minor. As the geography of the region became more understood, the arbitrary division of Europe and Asia extended along cultural lines, between societies viewed as 'Asian' or 'European'. Some of the boundaries follow geographic features such as mountain ranges and lakes, but that's because it also it marked tribal boundaries. The accepted boundaries were established before the advent of modern geology and the understanding of plate tectonics. I know about the Greek legend of Europa and Zeus, but always wondered when the term Europe was first used to describe the continent. Celts? Barbarians? Romans? Not a clue! Asked by Blue Rose - Mon Oct 29 13:23:32 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You're right in guessing the name has it's origins in the story of the abduction of Europa. You're probably familiar with the story of the Greek god Zeus carrying of the Princess of Tyre on his back to island of Crete. The ancient Greeks came to see this as a connotation of the exploration and colonization of the new unexplored lands of the western Mediterranean, by the Old World of Greece and Mesopotamia. The Hellenes came to use the name "Europe" as a name for their territories west of the Aegean Sea, as a distinction from their lands in the eastern Mediterranean. The Romans adopted this name, "Europa" to describe the whole of European continent, separating it from the older continent of Asia. The name was adopted by all the… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Mon Oct 29 13:43:04 2007 Discuss the events in europe that percipitated the great war What was the trigger?

This is a bit of an easy one - I assume you have an essay on it? A quick basic answer: As was said in 1st answer it was the assianation of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, the Crown Prince to the Austrian Throne. He was killed by a gunshot in the capital of Austrian controlled Bosnia Herzegovina, Sarajevo, but a Serbian nationalist. It has been urgued that Serbia was in fact behind it. The reason for the killing on the Crown Prince lay in his plans for the future Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Slav/Balkan provinces it held in the south. He was planning of reforming the Dual Monarchy of Austria & Hungary into a Triad - with the southern Slav provinces of Hungary (including Croatia) to join with Bosnia Herzegovina to make… [cont.] Answered by Rodger Belco29 - Sun Mar 16 21:44:21 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "europe" Honda, Renault Face Waning Demand After Good Quarter - ABC News
