Psychology is the scientific study of human or other animal mental functions and behaviors. In this field, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist. Psychologists are classified as social or behavioral scientists. Psychological research can be considered either basic or applied. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring underlying physiological and neurological processes.

Basic research in psychology includes perception, cognition, attention, emotion, motivation, brain functioning, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. Some, especially depth psychologists, also consider the unconscious mind. Psychologists employ empirical methods to determine causal and correlational relationships between psychosocial variables. In addition, or in opposition, to employing empirical and deductive methods, clinical psychologists sometimes rely upon symbolic interpretation and other inductive techniques.

While psychological knowledge is typically applied to the assessment and treatment of mental health problems, it is also applied to understanding and solving problems in many different spheres of human activity. The vast majority of psychologists are involved in clinical, counseling, and school positions, some are employed in the industrial and organizational setting, and other areas such as human development and aging, sports, health, the media, legal, and forensics. Psychology incorporates research from the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities.

Career in psychology without being a psychiatrist?
Q. I want to work in the field of psychology but don't want to be a psychiatrist. Mainly I want to study psychology, in other words be a psychologist, do I have to go through medical school, internship, etc. (the doctor process) to be one? Is a psychologist a doctor?

A. Many psychologists doing in clinical work have an MS degree or PhD or an DSW ((Doctorate on social work) Ifhe has a OPhd or DSW, he certainly ius a doctor, although he is not a medical doctor. My son in law's father spent a career in the Air Force as a psychologist. He has a master's degree in science in Psychology. Psychologists can do a lot of the counseling that mght be done by a psychiatrist. They , however, cannot presacribe drugs. That must be done by a doctor ( MD-type doctor, that is)

What does psychology specifically have to do with biology?
Q. What does one study that has to do with biology when studying psychology? I need to know for a school project.

A. Psychology also involves neurology, it analyzes how the brain functions chemically and physically. Without the study of Biology we wouldn't have the information to support genetic correlations for mental illnesses, nor we we understand diagnosing and medicating such illnesses (although that also involves Chemistry). Biology is necessary to support Psychology.

Psychotherapy

  • Despite the burgeoning technologies in the field of "helping", on many levels psychotherapy is still a crapshoot. Some of the goal of training, I think, is to help students accept that fact. The work is part science, part art, and part luck. Learning to tolerate the anxiety inherent in that recipe is critical for any clinician.
