In the social sciences a group can be defined as two or more humans who interact with one another, accept expectations and obligations as members of the group, and share a common identity. By this definition, society can be viewed as a large group, though most social groups are considerably smaller.

A true group exhibits some degree of social cohesion and is more than a simple collection or aggregate of individuals, such as people waiting at a bus stop. Characteristics shared by members of a group may include interests, values, representations, ethnic or social background, and kinship ties. Paul Hare regards the defining characteristic of a group as social interaction.

What AS levels are good to do Chemistry at a good (Russel Group) university?
Q. I'm going doing Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Sociology. I'm wondering if I should change one of them? Oh and no I don't want to do Maths or Physics. I don't mind doing Maths/Physics as part of a subject, but I don't want to do them alone. Oh and by Russel Group I'm thinking of a middle tier university like Liverpool.. NOT Imperial or Oxford, and Liverpool doesn't ask for Maths or another science for that matter.

A. I must warn you not to fall into the same delusion as I did, the maths involved in AS level are probably trivial but at university level, the maths involved are non-trivial. Function analysis, matrices, fourier transforms, complex integrations. Im at imperial college (best uni of russel group for science and engin.) and im studying chemistry and medicinal chemistry. I've had to buy maths textbooks and physics textbooks in order to keep up. I regret not doing further maths in A levels. Don't forget electrochemistry and statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics are parts of chem that require loads of maths. I can recall an incident, where I showed a friend in the maths department an integration and he could not do it, because it was too… [cont.]

Which group of plants is the control group out of these two?
Q. Group A was fed a balanced application of fertilizer with additional nitrogen. Group B was grown under identical conditions, except the fertilizer they recieved contained no additional nitrogen. Which plants represent the control group? Which plants represent the experimental group? What were the independent and dependent variables?
Asked by LaLa - Mon Aug 27 18:40:26 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I agree with Bhavi that Group B is the control group (regular fertilizer) and Group A is the experimental group (fertilizer with additional nitrogen). The variable that is changed is the amount of nitrogen, so that's the independent variable. The dependent variable will be the result measured or counted -- what happened because of the independent variable. Your description doesn't tell how the groups of plants are supposed to be evaluated, but the dependent variable may be any of these: -- height of the plants -- final dry mass of the plants -- subjective descriptions of the green-ness of the plants -- mass of seeds or fruits from the plants ... whatever is measured or counted for the results.

Is a doctor belonging to just one single medical group possibly better?
Q. We have been trying to short list a few Primary physicians (Internal medicine or Family practice) in our area. Some doctors belong to just one medical group where as other doctors belong to multiple medical groups. Can we make any assumptions based on this - example - the doctor belonging to multiple medical groups is possibly not getting enough patients in one medical group and hence needs to list himself in multiple medical groups. Similarly can we also assume the doctor belonging to just one medical group is able to sustain herself with enough patients in just that medical group and hence possibly slightly better?

A. I wouldn't assume so. getting many patients doesn't neccesarily mean that the doctor is good. I would highly suggest you go with the Internist, not the family medicine doctor
